Citizen on Patrol Volunteer Program Description
The Cottonwood Police Department (CPD) proudly serves the City of Cottonwood, Arizona, with a resident population of approximately 12,000 though the service population hovers around 40,000 people due the City’s role as an employment hub and tourism destination.
Cottonwood occupies an area of 16.
75 square miles near the scenic Verde River.

Cottonwood Police Department is comprised of 37 sworn and 27 civilian employees.
We operate the Cottonwood Public Safety Communications Center, a state-of-the-art regional communications facility serving Cottonwood Police Department, Cottonwood Fire and Medical Services and multiple Fire Districts in our region.
Our Department enjoys an invaluable Citizen on Patrol (COPS) volunteer program.
Our agency’s volunteers donate many hours of their personal time each year, enabling us to bolster our ability to serve our citizenry.
The Cottonwood Police Department typically responds to nearly 16,000 calls for service, makes over 1,500 arrests and issues approximately 2,500 traffic citations each year.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Under supervision of a member within the department, performs a variety of civilian, field, and office law enforcement duties in direct support of safety and non-safety personnel to include but not limited to: performing clerical duties including recordkeeping; answering telephones; data processing and filing; fingerprint individuals; perform photography duties; provide information and directions to the public; assists with traffic control, assist in the locating or marking of abandoned vehicles, issue parking citations, testify in civil court; uses a computer to process information and prepare reports.
The Volunteer (COPS) may participate in formal and non-formal training and programs as assigned; lifts and carries equipment and other items and performs strenuous activities.
Deal with the public in a respectful and courteous manner; learn, understand and apply applicable police department rules, regulations, instructions, laws, ordinances, policies, practices and methods; may assist with various investigative units as needed.
Perform other specialty duties requiring specialty certifications or qualifications, such as search and rescue operations, K-9 Handler duties, Armored Vehicle Operations, Mobile Command Operations.
Qualifications:
· Must be at least 21 years of age and able to work legally in the United States.
· Be of good moral character.
· Have a desire to help and serve the public.
· Have excellent communication and people skills.
· Must be willing to volunteer a minimum of 16 hours each month.
· Ability to physically and mentally perform tasks required for this job description.
· Possess and maintain a valid Arizona driver’s license.
· Successfully pass a thorough background and records check.
Physical Requirements:
· Stand and/or walk for long periods of time (parades, traffic control, crime scene security, etc.
)
· Sit (in a vehicle) and/or drive for long periods of time.
· Must be able to hear radio and telephone conversations at an appropriate volume level, with or without the assistance of hearing aide.
· Must be able to visually observe objects near and far, with or without the assistance of glasses or contact lens.
· Must be physically and mentally capable of performing the specified duties and responsibilities of the position.
