JOB Under general supervision, performs work of considerable difficulty in coordinating the repairing, maintaining, and rebuilding of vehicles and equipment.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES Plans, directs, coordinates, and supervises the activities of the repair shop and parts room.
Implements effective preventative maintenance schedules; supervises and instructs staff; Assists with evaluating staff performance on annual basis.
Performs and instructs staff with diagnosing and repairing problems in vehicles and equipment, using diagnostic equipment, and the standard practices of the industry.
Monitors and trains shop personnel in the safe use and operation of hand tools and power equipment.
Acts as shop supervisor as needed.
Responds to emergency situations as needed.
Performs mechanical work on a wide variety of vehicles and equipment, heavy-duty gasoline and diesel vehicles, pickups, cars, heavy-duty equipment, and related systems.
Performs diagnosis and repairs of computer systems, fuel injection systems, hydraulic systems, brake systems, electrical systems, suspension systems and power train systems in the shop and/or on job site.
Tests drive vehicles and equipment to substantiate deficiency complaints and effectiveness of repairs.
Acts as lead mechanic as necessary.
Modifies and fabricates special equipment.
Welds and fabricates using MIG, TIG, GMAW techniques and plasma metal cutting.
Orders parts and coordinates part needs with the warehouse.
Maintains written record of work performed.
Runs basic reports regarding pending preventative maintenance and repair history.
Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of: All tools and equipment used in equipment fleet maintenance and repair.
Occupational hazards and safety precautions.
Business English, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and composition.
Clerical office practices and procedures.
Current Microsoft Office software.
Filing and recordkeeping.
Skill in: Personnel supervision.
Communicating effectively verbally and in writing and communicating orally in a face-to-face setting and by telephone with public and employees.
Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public.
Organization, cleanliness and adherence to detail.
Ability to: Perform diagnosis and repairs of computer systems, fuel injection systems, hydraulic systems, brake systems, electrical systems, suspension systems, and powertrain systems.
Perform repair work on vehicles and equipment.
Effectively and efficiently interpret and apply information contained in technical repair manuals.
Work after hours/weekends due to inclement weather or emergency conditions.
Develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, employees of other departments, representatives of other organizations, County officials, and the public.
Keep management informed of key operating issues affecting the department.
Remain current in knowledge required to perform assigned duties.
Handle confidential matters and maintain discretion always.
Act with courtesy, tact, and diplomacy.
Work Environment: The work environment is associated with a workshop and field environment year-round in all weather conditions and includes exposure to loud noise, machinery, dust, fumes, mist, and chemicals.
Physical Requirements: Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
Sufficient vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech ability to communicate effective in-person and telephonically.
Capable of frequent repetitive movement of arms, fingers, and wrists.
Ability to walk, bend, push, pull, stoop, kneel, balance, climb, crawl, crouch, and lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
