POSITION SUMMARY: Guidance Counselors provide a comprehensive program which meets the needs of their assigned students.
Counselors promote and enhance academic, personal, social, and career development of all students.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Adhere to and support board policy, school guidelines, administrative rules and directives.
Provides guidance to individuals and groups of students to develop education, career and personal plans.
Provide school-to-career guidance activities using all resources available.
Advocate on behalf of the student and/or his/her family.
Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students.
Submit required reports promptly and accurately.
Communicates effectively with students, professional staff, parents and community in a positive manner.
Counsels and serves as a resource person for parents on concerns relative to their student.
Consults with school administrator, faculty and other personnel relative to school’s curricular offerings.
Works cooperatively with the staff to provide information concerning student needs.
Conferences with students, teachers, parents, and other relevant individuals concerning grades and works together for improvement.
Informs students of the requirement of state-mandated test dates, credit-by-exam dates, dual credit, college early admissions programs, and/or progress toward graduation.
Disseminates information to students concerning summer school, correspondence courses, GED and other alternative forms of education.
Identifies and verifies data for identifying students in “at risk”.
Uses computer to access data regarding schedules, assessment/achievement, transcripts, demographics, and family.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned QUALIFICATIONS KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIREMENTS: Must have or be able to obtain a valid Arizona Counselor Certificate.
Must have Structured English Immersion Endorsement, English as a Second Language Endorsement or a Bilingual Endorsement.
EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE: Masters degree or higher from an accredited college or university or Certified Teacher, Teacher on Assignment willing to receive Counseling Certificate within 2 years.
Five years of successful classroom teaching experience.
