TITLE: Teacher, SpEd STATE CODE: 300 to 310 Depends on Assignment REPORTS TO: Building Principal FSLA STATUS: Exempt EXPECTATION FOR ALL EMPLOYEES: Supports the organization’s mission, vision and values by exhibiting the following behaviors: excellence and competence, teamwork, innovation, respect, commitment to our community, accountability, ownership and a passion for working with youth.
POSITION SUMMARY: Under general supervision special education teachers work with children with mild to moderate disabilities, using or modifying the general education curriculum to meet the child’s individual needs.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Special education teachers help to develop an Individualized Education Program (IEP) for each student.
Plans, develops, writes, and implements curriculum and educational programs in accordance with educational/treatment goals and students' abilities.
Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students Interacts with and participates in consultations with specialists as appropriate in order to plan and prepare each child's individualized educational program in accordance with goals.
Prepares for classes assigned, and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate superior.
Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
Guides the learning process toward the achievement of state standards.
Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
Prepares appropriate documentation and reports on programs and on student progress.
Assists the administration in implementing all policies and/or rules governing student life and conduct, and for the classroom, develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
Makes provisions for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
May coordinate and lead the work of others.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIREMENTS: Must have or be able to obtain a valid Arizona Teaching Certificate with Special Education Endorsement or certificate.
Must be have strong communication skills Must be able to collaborate with general education teachers to best benefit the student.
Must be adaptable and maintain professional standards in any situation.
Must have excellent assessment skills to determine the educational needs of the student.
Must have diverse experience in teaching students with disabilities.
Must have the desire have compassion.
EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE: Bachelors degree or higher from an accredited college or university in special education.
Five years of successful classroom teaching experience including three years as a special education teacher.
